What you will need to follow this tutorial
You don’t need too much effort to plant and care for grass in the shady places in your area. Just a few tools and materials for a beautiful lawn.
- lawn aerator
- drop spreader
- lawn watering equipment
- lawnmower or trimmer
- grass seeds
The lawn planting process includes three main stages:
- plot preparation for landing
- choosing planting material
- grass care in the shade.
Often, shady areas under the trees or bushes can be cleared, cut off branches that are too thick. This lets the sun’s rays reach your lawn.
Step by step instructions
Step 1. Preparing your yard for new grass
This is an extremely significant and responsible process. The life of the planted grass will depend on it. If the area is filled with wilted grass, you have to till the area. If this is done in fall, you should be able to achieve this without deep digging, just slightly loosen the surface of the soil.
Sometimes moisture collects under the trees after rainfall, a drainage system can help with this.
The finalizing stage is the removal of weeds.
There are two ways to deal with them:
- chemical removal (herbicides),
- mechanical effect on weeds – weeding and mowing.
Step 2. Choosing your planting material
The right approach to selecting best grass seed for shade allows you to enjoy a green oasis even in the parts of the garden that always are in shade. Quality grass seed is not cheap, so budget accordingly. Pay attention, a high-quality ready-made seed mixture should consist of different types of grass.
Many homeowners prefer Bermuda grass. It’s resistant to drought and heat, especially in the summer. But a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight per day is needed. There’re several varieties of Bermuda grass that are highly resistant to shade. For example, the TifGrand ™ Bermuda variety (Tift No.4, ST-5). This hybrid has excellent shade resistance.
Bermuda grass is well suited for sandy soils. Sandy soils have some problems with preserving the water and minerals needed for grassroots.
Grass varieties for planting on a variety of soils including sandy soil are Centipede Grass, Bahia Grass, Cool Season Fescue, Zoysia Grass, and others.
Buy a grass with a germination rate higher than 70%. These grasses strengthen after 2-3 years of regular care. When buying a ready-made seed mixture, it’s impossible to be assured of the seed quality.
Step 3. The care for the grass grown in the shade
Aeration. This process improves the growth of the grass, especially in the shade. A lawn aerator makes the holes that allow water, fertilizer, and air to penetrate the roots. The best time for aeration is spring or fall.
Fertilizer. Grass in shady places needs less fertilizer. A thin layer of compost is an excellent fertilizer in early spring. Use a push broom to spread it evenly.
Seed spreader. To evenly distribute seeds use drop spreader. A drop spreader can be expensive, but it’s worth the investment.
Watering. Grass shouldn’t be watered often in the shade places. Using special lawn watering equipment you stimulate the formation of deeper roots.
Trimming. Grass in the shade should be a little higher than in sunny areas of the yard. Grass needs to be cut carefully. Change the cutting height on your lawnmower.
